DISGRUNTLED BOOK THIEVES: the case of OceanofPDF book piracy

*ALL NAMES HAVE BEEN HIDDEN TO SAFEGUARD THE PRIVACY OF BOTH THE GUILTY AND THE INNOCENT*

A couple of weeks ago, it came to my attention that a book piracy site, known as Ocean of PDF, was taken down due to an Author complaining about it.

It is illegal to pirate books, as you are giving away something for free that does not belong to you.

This Author had EVERY right to complain.

Before I show you some of the appalling tweets, let’s discuss why I, along with my writing  collegues are so very livid over this.

WRITING A BOOK IS HARD!!!

WRITING A BOOK IS WORK!!!

AN AUTHOR SHOULD GET PAID FOR THEIR WORK!

I’ve blogged about the value of an Author’s work before, because I have  seen so many readers asking writer’s to give their books away for free.

Sometimes they do.

I’ve seen new Indie Authors have books available for as low as 99 cents, and then slowly raise it as they grow their audience.

They are giving you a chance to give them a chance, for a very low cost.

But…

when an Author refuses, I’ve seen the readers get very, very angry.

Why?

I cannot, for the life of me, make the connection between being a book lover and not valuing the work an Author put into it.

Is it because writing is romantisized in the movies?

Ah yes…

the scene…

the writer wakes up, feeds his loyal, adorable dog, fixes coffee and then sits on the porch of his writing cottage by the lake.

Then he goes in and types, types, types, types,

and

voila!

He’s done! It goes to the publisher tomorrow!

Yay…erm…no

It’s a movie.

Many writers hold steady jobs outside of writing. They have bills to pay, responsibilities, families.

I really wish I could blame it on Hollywood, but in true seriousness, I can’t.

As a writer and reader, when I’m reading an amazing book where the words and story flow perfectly, I often pause to wonder how long the Author agonized over the paragraph I just read.
