A MURDER OF AUTHORS

Dear book readers,

Some of you are slowly murdering the souls of Authors and you don’t even realize it.

No, it’s not by leaving a bad review. ALL writers get bad reviews throughout their career.

If you didn’t like the book, you didn’t like the book and that’s fine. We aren’t going to enjoy every book we come across.

Reviews are important to Authors, because more reviews equal more exposure.

If you only want to leave stars for your review and not write any comments, that is still super helpful.

Authors do like comments because they want you to discuss their books, and also let them know what you liked or didn’t like.

Authors want to grow as storytellers.

So, I’m not saying don’t leave a BAD review, I’m telling you this:

  • DO NOT LEAVE A BAD REVIEW IF YOUR BOOK DID NOT DOWNLOAD PROPERLY! (Contact Amazon Customer Service for this issue. This is NOT the fault of the Author, it is an Amazon issue!)
  • DO NOT LEAVE A BAD REVIEW IF YOUR BOUND COPY OF A BOOK ARRIVED LATE OR DAMAGED! (Contact Amazon and your delivery service.)
  • DON’T PUT ONE STAR FOR A BOOK ON GOODREADS FOR A BOOK THAT YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT PLAN TO. IF YOU WANT TO HOLD A BOOK ON GOODREADS! ( AS A REMINDER, THERE ARE SHELVES FOR THIS! YOU CAN LABEL IT “WANT TO READ.”)

Okay, I’m finished yelling. 🙂

Writing and establishing a career as an Author is hard work. Please don’t blame the Author for the things that are not in control of.

Please stop murdering the souls of Authors, they are already bleeding for you.

Thanks for writing about the importance of reviews. Readers will send me emails about liking my books (don’t get me wrong, I appreciate this) but not post their opinions anywhere else.

I’ve mulled over “they are bleeding for you.” I speak for myself here. Though I have an audience in mind when I write, I write because I can’t help myself. I bleed, sure, but it’s from my internal self-doubt, not on behalf of the reader.
