I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! ~The Dark Side~ by Danielle Steel

Description

In her new novel, Danielle Steel tells a riveting story of the dark side of motherhood.

Zoe Morgan’s childhood was marked by her younger sister’s tragic illness, watching as her parents dedicated themselves completely to her final days and then divorced. As a young woman driven by these painful memories, Zoe sets the bar high for herself, studying hard and pursuing a career in the nonprofit world, where her deep compassion for disadvantaged children finds a focus.

When Zoe falls in love and has her own child, she is determined to be a perfect mother as well. But before long, old scars long dormant begin to pull Zoe to the edge of an abyss too terrifying to contemplate.

As Zoe is haunted by the ghosts of the past, her story will become a race against time and a tale of psychological suspense that no reader will soon forget.

MY THOUGHTS

WOW! I could not put this book down, and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish!

You first read about Zoe’s growing up years with her very ill sister. After her sister dies, Zoe thinks the “The wrong sister died, she was their favorite” which makes her become an overachiever, which later develops into Munchausen by proxy when she has her own daughter.

Both terrifying and compelling, this book felt like it could be ripped from today’s headlines!

This book will be available for purchase on August 29, 2019

Fiction: “A Guide to Becoming Distinctly Average” by Amy Elliott-Smith

61ibfd0cfcl ” I wrote my suicide note today. It was shit. I can’t die and leave a shit suicide note behind. It has to be something epic…”

DESCRIPTION:

WINNER: 2013 Beryl Bainbridge Award for First Time Author

Life is a bitch. Depression is a bitch. Spending your life with depression, working with bitches is the worst of the worst.

A Guide to Becoming Distinctly Average is a laugh-out-loud, dark comedy, which delves into the depths of a thirty-something dog groomer’s mind as she struggles to cope with life, depression and dogs who wee up her sofa.

Ultimately, the question she must ask is…

Can I carry on?

MY THOUGHTS:

Depression is something that is still not handled correctly nor viewed in the right way, not even in today’s society.

This Author takes an awesome Fictional approach to it, and it is both disturbing and yes, hilarious. Not that depression is a joke, but her humorous approach to the topic is still spot on.

I highly recommend reading this book. This is one book that will stick with me for quite awhile

I received my requested copy from NetGalley and read and reviewed at my choosing.

Impossible to put down! “The Girl Before” by JP Delaney

cover95480-medium.png

DESCRIPTION:

In the tradition of The Girl on the Train, The Silent Wife, and Gone Girl comes an enthralling psychological thriller that spins one woman’s seemingly good fortune, and another woman’s mysterious fate, through a kaleidoscope of duplicity, death, and deception.

Please make a list of every possession you consider essential to your life.

The request seems odd, even intrusive—and for the two women who answer, the consequences are devastating.

EMMA
Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant—and it does.

JANE
After a personal tragedy, Jane needs a fresh start. When she finds One Folgate Street she is instantly drawn to the space—and to its aloof but seductive creator. Moving in, Jane soon learns about the untimely death of the home’s previous tenant, a woman similar to Jane in age and appearance. As Jane tries to untangle truth from lies, she unwittingly follows the same patterns, makes the same choices, crosses paths with the same people, and experiences the same terror, as the girl before.

MY REVIEW:

Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down until I was finished. I just HAD to know what was going to happen next.

The Author does a great job of going back and forth between Emma’s story and Jane’s.

Just…so disturbing and realistic, I felt like I was in that house!

This is one of those books where when you are finished reading, you need to sit back and take a breather and think about.

It is still on my mind and I read it a week ago.

Definitely add this one to your weekend reading list.

I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Chalk Dust Stories by Pedro Freire Costa

chalk-dust-stories

DESCRIPTION:

Chalk Dust is a collection of short stories set in Portugal, with plots full of twists and turns, with real characters that display unusual traits. The stories are piercing, moving, unpredictable, and at times, touching and hilarious.

What sort of intimate secrets can an eighty-four-year-old spinster lady, who has always lived with her sisters, hide from her family?

A story that swings across four decades in the history of Portugal involves a teenager, who witnessed the sudden death of his father far away from home. He grows up as an orphan with the austerity of his uncle’s home and with the tenderness complicit of his father’s former lover. As narrator, why does he tell us he was so keen on staying in an old dusty and mouldy hotel room in Aveiro overlooking the lighthouse on the estuary?

A wealthy middle-aged doctor proposes to save the assets of a friend, a businessman, who’s on the verge of bankruptcy. What sorts of twists bring to the plot a sudden metamorphosis of the proposal?

A bull that behaves like a dog quietly following its master, unaware of the power of its horns, has its tragic destiny set by the attitude and the despair of its master—a story rooted in cultural features.

On the edge of a large estate, there is a hamlet where a handicapped young man of uncertain origin lives; what underlies the tenderness and protection of the priest who looks after him?

Card players in a public garden are common. How far can a bet go? A sordid story? Spooky? Funny? Freak? A caricature?

MY REVIEW:

Beautiful and delightful stories based in Portugal. Funny, sad, thoughtful. I highly recommend this book, as the writing and style is very unique.

A lovely book of short stories.

I received the book from the Author in exchange for my review.

Action & Steamy Scenes: The Liberian Agenda by L.J. Taylor

51l8tfmgvul-_ac_us160_

DESCRIPTION:

Sonia Johnson, native New Yorker, attorney, and daughter of a U.S. Senator, never expected to find herself a virtual prisoner in Liberia, but her husband – the country’s new president by way of coup d’etat – won’t let her take their son back to the States. The only way for her to protect him from her husband’s enemies is to spy on her new family for the C.I.A. If she gets caught, her son will grow up without a mother – if he grows up at all.

MY REVIEW:

If you like Dan Brown novels, you will certainly enjoy this fast paced book, however be aware there are some very steamy scenes. I enjoyed them, but just be aware. And I think if you just skimmed over these scenes, it wouldn’t hurt the story for you.

When I first received this book for review, I set it aside, as I’ve read many books of the Mother having to save her child internationally, but I’m glad I finally picked it up.

It is well written, the dialogue is on point with feeling realistic and not stilted, and the action never slows.

I hope to read more books in the future by L.J. Taylor

A great read!

A Treasure of a book

51MfO0a70ZL

I am not a talented enough writer to give this book the proper review it deserves. I fear I will somehow, unintentionally tarnish the value of this treasure.

This book is long, but the chapters are short. This is a book to be savored, word by precious word.

This is the rare book you find that you want to read from beginning to end in one sitting, but discover you must set it down from time to time in order to think.

I miss the characters already…I miss the seamless jumps from past to present, so expertly written.

I think perhaps, I shall read it again soon, and I beyond highly recommend it.

Very deserving of the Pulitzer Prize it received.

Available for purchase on Amazon.

Can a Persian Cat Start a War?

Can a Persian cat start a war? It would seem so in this hilarious, fast paced thriller! This is Book One of the Harry Linley Trilogy, and I cannot wait to read the others!

Poor Harry Linely was only supposed to house sit for a friend, when two men end up dead which starts a chain of events that include sex, deceit and murder.

This book is set in Dubai and the author does an amazing job of describing it and making you feel like you are there.

This is a must read. Just be sure to set time aside to do nothing but read, because you will not want to put this down!
